I ticked Mexico off my "Go to" list when I visited the wonderful city and beaches of Costa Maya, Mahahual, Bacalar, Cozumel, Playa Del Sol and Playa Del Carmen. Mexico is full of colour, tradition, natural surroundings, landscapes, and stunning ancient monuments like the Mayan Ruins. The sun shines brighter and is five times stronger than the Mediterranean which made me go out of sunscreen really fast.

  While there are more must-see places in Mexico than can I could possibly fit, I decided to share with you all the beautiful wonders of the Mexican waters.

  Since I was born in Greece snorkelling, diving, fishing and speed boat riding are my casual summer fun time hobbies, but what's even more fun about Mexico is that you can do it even in the winter! 

  Mexico is a brilliant place to go swimming with turtles in any time of the year. It was absolutely incredible to see the turtles, although that’s not all you can see since the ocean is a world full of wonders.

So here is one of the many places that I got and loved to explore in Mexico!

"Laguna de Bacalar"

 (Lake of Seven Colours)

  One of my favourite places is Mexico’s second largest body of freshwater, located in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo in the southeastern part of Mexico, near the Belize border, which is also known as the "Lagoon of 7 colours". The colour of the crystal-clear water turns into various shades of turquoise and blue depending on the depth of the lake and the time of the day-it’s simply magical! Every part is so clear that some areas look just like sand, even when they are covered in 4 foot of water. 

Pictures can't capture enough the beauty to its colours. Every spot has a different story!   What was even more amazing was the real living rocks Stromatolites. The lake contains a huge population of the oldest life on the planet, the cauliflower-like stromatolites that only still exist in a few locations. They are quite old and produce a huge amount of oxygen, which means that they are an exceptional life form that can "respire" using solid metal oxides, rather like batteries. They come from within the Holocene era, and this is one of the few places in the world where the ancient life form continues to thrive. Back in the day even pirates and traders were seeking their treasures.

 There are beautiful starfish, turtles, aquatic animals in all of these beautiful places in Mexico and being able to see and appreciate this much beauty has definitely brought me even closer to the water element of our nature. Bacalar is truly a little slice of paradise in the southeast region of Mexico.

  It is inspiring and amazing to visit. The locals in Bacalar are trying to keep this beautiful lake hidden from the rest of the world, mostly to protect its beauty and history and they are definitely right about it. So, if you do visit, be courteous and protect the environment.   

  All it takes is motivation and compassion to effectively rescue the earth’s oceans, even by doing one small thing like educating yourself on the ocean’s ecosystems can help save the ocean life. There are many ways that someone can make this positive act while on holiday like, reducing the use of plastic, picking up waste that’s lying about and by always be aware of disposing your rubbish and recyclables properly and follow discharge regulations in the area. There are also many campaigns to support that help save the sea life and species that are under extinction. There really is no 'Planet B' in this whole universe. So make the difference.
